Show Transcript

Greeting, you’re listening to the Liam Photography Podcast, I’m your host Liam Douglas and this is Episode 372 for Thursday October 12th, 2023. In today’s episode I want to talk about some new technology that can make life easier for people like myself that work remotely as their full time job. This new product is call the Viture XR One AR glasses.

These are a pair of glasses that look very similar to regular sunglasses and they have a magnetic cord that attaches behind the right hear and then plugs into your iPhone via USB-C. The glasses are powered entirely by your device so they are sleek, slim and no need to worry about battery life when using them. Now I know you are thinking, “But what about my iPhone battery?”, well they have an adapter that you can use that allow for the glasses to be plugged in and also have another USB-C plugged in that is Power Delivery to keep your phone charged at the same time.

Now the Viture is basically just a wearable external monitor, which is extremely handy for someone like myself. While wearing them, I can have a 120” monitor about two feet in front of me. This virtual monitor is also capable of of allowing me to multitask with multiple windows open at the same time with one having Teams up and running and another with Safari, etc.

The main way that this is going to benefit my remote work is that when we go up north to visit our kids and grandkids, I can have a large monitor to work on without hooking up to one of my son’s TVs or disrupting everyone else. I don’t want you to think that this device only works with iPhone or Apple devices, it also works with Android as well as Nintendo Switch. They have an entire list of compatible devices on their website, which includes iPhones, iPads, MacBook Pro, Mac mini and MacBook Air.

If you remember, back in June of this year, Apple held their WWDC event as they always do and this is when they announce their new software for the fall as well as new hardware. This past summer Apple announced their new Vision Pro AR/VR headset that will be available next year. This product is basically a computer that you wear on your face and is big, bulky and has a battery pack that only lasts 1-2 hours or has to be plugged into AC power. This Apple product looks similar to the VR headsets that people use for playing video games and resembles a pair of goggles or the headsets worn in the movie Ready Player One. In addition to the Vision Pro being large and bulky and having a battery pack, it also has a hefty price tag at $5,000.

The Viture XR One might not be a full computer that you wear on your face, but it is also more sleek and streamlined and weighs much less at only 78 grams. The Viture can also stream Netflix and Disney+ as well as Hulu and Youtube. Another great thing about the Viture is that if you wear prescription glasses as I do for reading only, they have an adjustment on the top of each side for adjusting for your vision. Additionally you can adjust them using a button on the left side that allows you to darken the background around your screen so that you can better see it and have less distraction and it also has built in speakers made by Harman which allow you to hear any audio without bothering anyone else.

When it comes to the Viture XR One it has another big advantage over the Apple Vision Pro and that is it’s price tag. The Viture is priced at only $500-$650 depending on what package you get. I have reached out to Viture via their Instagram channel to see if I could get a loaner model to try out and they said they passed my info to their marketing team but I have not heard from them yet but it’s only been a day or so. I am planning to just get a pair myself more than likely since I learned about it from a Youtube tech channel that I have followed for years and the guy that runs the channel is very reputable. To be honest, I am really excited about getting one of these for my IT work as it will make my life so much easier, especially when traveling or when I just want to relax on our front deck during the summer months and enjoy the weather while still having a large screen to work on.

On another, side note, this past weekend one of the managers I worked with at my old IT job at Virgin Orbit reached out to me this past weekend and asked for my assistance in accessing data off their old Linux servers. I guess the parent company, Virgin Global is trying to access the Intellectual Property data so they wanted me to work for them as a freelance contractor from now until next August. The money is really good so I said yes and now I basically have two IT jobs. It will be a lot of extra hours but will also give Tina and I a lot of extra money, so I will hopefully have enough money to pay off my new Corolla way early and also get myself a GFX100S as well!

Now let’s look at a couple of news stories for this week from our friends at PetaPixel.
